A Kuranda fashion designer is releasing a line of pineapple fibre lingerie.
Leah Kelly is among local artists and architects whose work will b showcased at the Designed in Cairns exhibition, which opens at James Cook University tonight.
Ms Kelly describes her creations as being “organic wearable art”. She began experimenting with pineapple fibre about 18 months ago.
“It’s been around since the 16th century,” she said. “When the Spanish invaded the Philippines, missionaries were disgusted by the nakedness of native people and insisted they cover up.” She said they sued find strands from pineapple leaves which were loomed and turned into textile.
Ms Kelly also uses hemp and bamoo in her garments, which are sold online and at Kuranda markets.
Designed in Cairns will run until June 26 and entry is free.
